The bowl is a soft flexible plastic that you flip open by pulling it out and up from the side of the bottle (essentially inside out since there is no moving hinge) into the position shown. The soft plastic bowl will not break even if you drop the bottle.
Many other bottles have a hard plastic bowl that can crack on impact with the ground or even the sand at the beach, as BarkinWoofer discovered walking on the beach one day, with a different brand that had a hard plastic hinged bowl. That other bottle was rendered useless for dog use.
